Boy Back Home by Amy Alexander
The impossibility of long distance relationships is today's topic.
When I last wrote about Amy Alexander at the end of summer, I told you all you needed to know about how she’s an English girl mixing it in the big leagues of Nashville. She sometimes refers to her roots in her socials, and still has that M&S coat.
This week’s song can be interpreted more generally in the sense of someone ending a relationship because they have to leave town: it could be work, family, emigration. There are all kinds of reasons someone might up sticks.
However when the singer has made such a big move in IRL it is tempting to interpret this song as autobiographical in some way. At the very least, Amy first-hand knows what it’s like to leave family and fly 3,000 miles and six time zones to chase a dream. She’s totally open about the one doing the breaking up and feels guilt, remorse. He will be okay, won’t he? The bottom line is that if she isn’t happy, the relationship would never have worked anyway. She’s setting him free.
I really love this one, which is more reflective and melancholy than her summer songs Any Way Together and Hard to be a Heartbreaker. Amy has really hit a groove and is always exciting to listen to, whether you are British or not. It’s a quieter song, which allows the sadness to simmer away. A cool song for the fall, and a nicely timed release.
You can catch and hear Amy Alexander in all the usual places, including on her Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. You can watch and listen on YouTube also.
Amy Alexander: British Invasion
I had been tracking Amy Alexander since the spring, enjoying her debut single back then, Any Way Together, as well as her social posts. It was quite a long while after that I realised Amy was British. Oh man! Anyone who has travelled to Nashville as an outsider, especially as a Brit, will always grab my attention.
