Amy Alexander: British Invasion
Amy is a British country music artist who moved to Nashville in 2019. Even before then she has been singing her whole life.
I had been tracking Amy Alexander since the spring, enjoying her debut single back then, Any Way Together, as well as her social posts. It was quite a long while after that I realised Amy was British. Oh man! Anyone who has travelled to Nashville as an outsider, especially as a Brit, will always grab my attention.
Amy is a British country music artist who moved to Nashville in 2019 to attend Belmont as part of a study abroad program with Nottingham University. Even before then she has been singing her whole life, and began writing songs in 2020.
After releasing her first single Any Way Together this May, her second single Hard to be a Heartbreaker came out last week and there is plenty more where they came from. Amy teamed up in 2024 with Grammy-nominated producer Brad Hill (Maren Morris, Vince Gill, Brothers Osborne) and Dave Thomson, and both tracks were co-produced by them.
Any Way Together is a really strong, commercial country song with a catchy groove. It’s accessible, fun and catchy: everything you would want. Hard to be a Heartbreaker on the other hand is an absolute belter with more of an edge lyrically. I loved them both on first hearing.
And just before you start out with your labels and pigeonholing, which I know you love, Amy tells me that her third song is more acoustic and stripped back, which made me think of Meghan Linsey. Yes, Amy has a mainstream voice and I cannot wait to hear her sing about the darker side too. Amy puts it better than I can:-
Amy Alexander is not your typical country artist. Born and raised just north of London, Amy fell in love with country music from an early age and never looked back. Citing Shania Twain and Carrie Underwood as some of her earliest influences, it was country’s powerhouse vocals and one-of-a-kind storytelling that made her fall in love with the genre.
In other words, Amy Alexander fell for country for all the same reasons I did, and she fell hard as only an outsider can. Except that I started earlier, in 1999, with Natalie Maines and Bluegrass.
It would be tempting to say that Amy Alexander has an enormous future. In fact she is already very big indeed. Her mid-Atlantic background calls to mind other stars like Lola Kirke, Lilly Winwood and Zoee Byrne. However that background is also practically useful. She has already been played on radio in the UK as well as in Nashville. She has also established partnerships with fashion brands such as Lucchese Bootmaker, which underlines her characteristic visual style as well as a vocal one.
You can catch and hear Amy Alexander in all the usual places, including on her Instagram, TikTok, and (for the boomers like me) Facebook. You can watch and listen on YouTube also.
