I’ve been following Bee Ounsworth from Buckle ‘n’ Boots for around a year now and every song is catchy and full of fun. It’s been great writing about more British country artists. Her new EP, This Far, is a collection of songs from the last year or so. One or two have been released as singles but there are several new ones, and new versions, to listen to today.
“This Far is exactly that – my journey so far. The ups, the downs and everything in between. Each song takes you through a different part of my journey, combining upbeat country with some more emotional, stripped-back moments, all centred around honest storytelling and my love for country music.” (Bee Ounsworth)
We got pubs and pints, no neon lights on bars
I trade our football teams for your rodeo stars
You got Nashville, we got Big Ben
I’m just trying to fit in cuz
I’m a country girl from another country land
Bee drew our attention in particular to My Kinda Country and I had already noted it as a catchy, fun country song that could only have been written by a Brit in love with American country music. I’ve been listening to We’d Be Happy, Won’t We? all summer and I always smile when it comes on in the car. My Kinda Country is also like that: really fun and best played loud.
I’ve got a long line of lists
That don’t get any shorter
No time on my hands
To make plans with my daughter
The new EP finishes off with a reflective acoustic song called Best Part Of Me which OG fans will recognise as a new version of a Buckle ‘n’ Boots original. This song in particular is a fabulous showcase for Bee’s voice and is full of nostalgia and longing.
Taken together as a single record, there is something here for everyone. Bee is just as confident singing loud dance floor honky tonk belters as she is with the sing-songwriter solo ballads.
