You are going to love this song From The Start. It’s much deeper and more clever than it seems on first listen. Sure, the first time you hear it, you can appreciate the sheer quality of Lex LaShaun’s voice. Did someone whisper Tracy Chapman? But I’m thrilled to let you in on the secret: she might protest, but she’s as country as they come.
Somewhere in the middle of this song, Lex sings “I love a good country song even though I’m not a country girl” and you can sort of understand what she means. However it was the chorus that first alerted my suspicions. Have a look.
I love fishin’ in the dark, even though I’ve never been
And I’ve never shot anything with gunpowder and lead
But I’ll walk the line cause I’m head over boots
For that beautiful, crazy, neon moon
Now, I’m not a country guy in the strict, religious sense. I’m a devout admirer, but it’s not a daily practice for me. I don’t worship at the Opry, the official church of country music. But perhaps you already noted all the references I missed? Head Over Boots by Jon Pardi, a favourite with Mrs Tennessee Vibes? And what about Neon Moon by Brooks & Dunn? Oh, this is clever. Lex LaShaun turns out to be just about as addicted to country as you can imagine. [You missed Walk The Line by the JC himself. And Fishin’ in the Dark too! Ed.]
So that clears it all right up: Lex is a country girl through and through.
Anyone who loves The Chicks is fine with me. Lex gives the game away with a Goodbye Earl reference in the lyrics. And what’s this? Wheels on a gravel road? Lucinda Williams. Honestly, for someone who keeps telling me she’s not a country girl, she knows a lot about it!
Lex LaShaun is a genuinely fresh, very genuine and authentic country artist who is also an eloquent advocate for black country artists, and female country artists. As a British fan, one of the great mysteries of America, especially in the South, is the persistent undercurrent of racism.
Darius Rucker appeared last week at the Grand Ole Opry Live in London celebrations at the Royal Albert Hall in Kensington. I remember him when he was a joke in a Friends episode the first time around. Perhaps he got there first, perhaps Beyoncé contributed a little too but it feels like country is finally opening up to artists from minority groups. It’s going to be even more exciting with Lex LaShaun in the frame as well.
